Robert Alexander Schumann was a nineteenth century German composer during the early romantic period whose works vividly captured emotions, literary moods, and themes. Critics have both criticized and praised his works, but nearly all agree that Schumann was a principal figure of the early romantic movement. The following will provide a biographical account of Schumann’s life and examine his major works, style, and contributions to the musical field.
